Within the European PDS-XADS project, funded by European Commission in the 5th Framework Programme and mainly devoted to the demonstration of the feasibility of the coupling among an accelerator, a spallation target and a sub-critical core fuelled with standard MOX fuel, preliminary investigations on the conditions for enhancing the transmutation rate at values suitable for an Industrial-scale Transmuter charged with U-free composite fuel (Pu, Cm, Am)O2 dispersed in a magnesium oxide matrix were carried out. These evaluations, performed with the ERANOS Procedure using a simplified RZ models in which homogeneous media represent the various core regions, show that a good compromise between transmutation and core performance can be achieved with an ADT core having a power between 200 and 400 MWth. The increase of the core size has a significant implication on the overall plant architecture (accelerator, spallation module, decay heat removal system, reactivity control and monitoring, etc.) and in the same time affects the transmutation rate for a given U-free fuel technology. This paper deals with the key issues that need to be addressed to the design of such cores in order to optimize the transmutation capability and reports the results of the preliminary scoping analyses performed to assess the transmutation rates for the LBE-cooled XADS.
