This paper investigates the RELAP5 capability to simulate the passive systems for Decay Heat Removal that implement in-pool heat exchangers. The work has been carried out in the frame of a R & D activity aimed to increase the reliability of such systems. The choice of the Isolation Condenser System, taken as a reference for the development of the RELAP model, does not affect the general validity of the theoretical assessment. Both steady state and transient calculations have been performed to verify that the heat removal capacity as well as the natural circulation stability are well predicted by the code. At the last the RELAP model developed has been used to define the preliminary design of a new device, which is able to avoid the implementation of mechanical valve on primary circuit reducing thermalmechanical constrains and thermal-hydraulic instabilities.
