The experimental work has demonstrated the feasibility of activating a number of transesterification reactions, such as the alcoholysis and glycerolysis of triglycerides, through microwaves. Compared with the industrial methods currently used to perform these reactions, the results indicate higher yields and conversions still maintaining identical 'chemicals'. Microwave activation in these reactions also allows to reduce both temperature and reaction time, which accordingly translates into lower energy consumption and non-degraded products.

Application of Microwaves to Transesterification Reactions (Alcholysis and Glycerolysis) of Triglycerides

Abstract

The experimental work has demonstrated the feasibility of activating a number of transesterification reactions, such as the alcoholysis and glycerolysis of triglycerides, through microwaves. Compared with the industrial methods currently used to perform these reactions, the results indicate higher yields and conversions still maintaining identical 'chemicals'. Microwave activation in these reactions also allows to reduce both temperature and reaction time, which accordingly translates into lower energy consumption and non-degraded products.
