This paper describes the effect of graphene functionalizing with ZnO nanoparticles on the gas sensing properties. A straight microwave-assisted synthesis of the hybrid material was applied, which encompassed the mixing of graphene powder with ZnO nanoparticles and a microwave irradiation for a few minutes. The hybrid material was then collected with the hydro-alcoholic solution and drop casted onto a transducer. The tests carried out toward NO2 demonstrate the significant improvements of sensitivity and selectivity with respect to the bare graphene. This result was related to the synergistic effect of zinc oxides and graphene layers, and specifically on the increased surface area and a masking effect of the graphene sites responsible for slow responses.
