A paddle dryer system having working volume of 0.025 m3 was used as non-conventional bioreactor to carry out enzymatic hydrolysis (EH) of steam exploded (SE) wheat straw. The purpose was to increase the efficiency of saccharification in the case of slurries with high load of solid by exploiting the excellent mixing performance of the machinery. The substrate was obtained by steam explosion at 210 °C for 6 minutes, washed with water to remove hemicellulose and inhibitors. The tests showed that the cellulose conversion in glucose can reach the yield of 66% even at solid/liquid suspension ratio as high as 0.3 w/w versus typical values of 50% that were achieved using a standard bioreactor equipped with different kinds of impellers. © 2017, ETA-Florence Renewable Energies. Abstract
