Within the frame of the WP 4.1 of the EC funded Concerted Action IVCRS, CEA (FR) and ENEA (I) have performed in collaboration some preliminary calculations, aimed at identifying the lacks and the needs of the analytical models available for a comprehensive assessment of an IVCRS technical solution. For this purpose, a best estimate approach has been adopted for the theoretical assessment of the Dual In-Vessel Retention (DIVER) concept, proposed by CEA for high power PWRs. Both generic phenomena involved in the IVCRS (e.g. behaviour of the corium pool) and specific phenomena associated to the coolability of the particular concept studied (gap between the crucible and the RPV wall) have been taken into account. The calculations have been performed with best estimate French codes under CEA supervision. Specifically the behaviour of the corium pool within the core catcher have been analysed with the TOLBIAC code and the behaviour of the cooling system with the CATHARE code. Both codes are developed in frame of an agreement between CEA, EdF and Framatome. Results have provided useful information about critical aspects concerning the design of the core catcher device as well as have highlighted needs in code modelling.
