Abstract

In the frame of the SPIDER (Strands Pre-stressing far Internal Damping of Earthquake Response) Project a new system far the protection of buildings against the earthquake is studied. The project studies the application of pre-stressed cables in series with tension spring dampers. The cable is fixed at one of the ends to the basement of the building and, at the other end, to the upper part of the building. The viscous fluid damper, coupled in series with the cable, is located close to the basement. The cable is connected with a special device at each of the floor. In this report the application of this Damper Cable System (DCS) of a generic eight storey buildings is studied. The building equipped with DCS is submitted to two artificial time-histories computed following the Eurocode 8 criteria far medium and soft soils. Three different cable layouts, ali respecting the 'Constant Horizontal Force' criterion, ara studied to evaluate possible alternative solutions far this type of building. The behaviour of the building without any anti-seismic device is also computed, using the same.time-histories. The results obtained with and without DCS were compared to evaluate the effects of the system on the protection against an earthquake. The numerical analyses were performed by means of the Abaqus Code SPIDER Project - Contract EVG1 - CT -1999 - 00013 WP4 - Mathematical modelling of structure - DCS Task 4.2: Parametric analysis of selected buildings Task 4.3: Detailed review of effect of seismic input Deliverable D9 - D10 Doc. n.: EVG1-CT -1999-00013 SPIDER/4.2/ENEA/ APO/06/V1.11
