This report summarizes the results of the scoping study aimed at investigating the impact of different fuel options on the neuronic performance of the DLFR core. Nitride – with both natural and enriched nitrogen –, silicide and metallic fuels are considered, and compared to the reference, oxide option. Designing new, optimized configurations exploiting the peculiar features of each alternative fuel is beyond the scope of this study. Nonetheless, the results are thoroughly discussed so as to permit drawing, from the insight here presented, useful information for envisaging future advanced alternatives with enhanced performances.

Abstract

This report summarizes the results of the scoping study aimed at investigating the impact of different fuel options on the neuronic performance of the DLFR core. Nitride – with both natural and enriched nitrogen –, silicide and metallic fuels are considered, and compared to the reference, oxide option. Designing new, optimized configurations exploiting the peculiar features of each alternative fuel is beyond the scope of this study. Nonetheless, the results are thoroughly discussed so as to permit drawing, from the insight here presented, useful information for envisaging future advanced alternatives with enhanced performances.
