This paper deals with the conceptual design of an experimental plant which completes the new test facility for thermal test, built in ENEA Research Center of Saluggia (VC). This is an experimental furnace equipped with a grate for solid bio-fuels to test their combustibility in real scale, with the scope of combustion optimization, emissions reduction and efficiency improvement. This design is based on experience and knowledge gained during combustion studies on biomass representative samples, both in laboratory by means of a fixed grate plant rated 750 kW for full scale operation, an underfeed bed, a thermogravimetric furnace, and by comparison with a similar plant, designed in Italy, running in an olive-mill in Puglia (Italy).
