Abstract

In the framework of a research program on innovative safety systems, ENEA has in progress a R&D activity aimed at developing a device able to increase the reliability of in-pool Heat Exchanger passive Residual Heat Removal systems. This device, so-called PERSEO (in-Pool Energy Removal System for Emergency Operation), enables the control of the removed power in the pool avoiding the installation of valve on pressurized loops, thus reducing thermal-mechanical constraints and thermal-hydraulic instability.Demonstration tests were performed in the PERSEO facility installed at SIET thermal-hydraulic research centre in Piacenza (Italy). This paper deals with the description of PERSEO experimental facility and its operating conditions, and presents the most significant experimental results, compared with the analytical pre-test ones obtained with Relap5 code, providing material to discuss the validity of this device.
