The main objective of the EUROTRANS Integral Project is to carry out a first advanced design of an experimental facility (50 to 100 MWth) demonstrating the technical feasibility of Transmutation in a Lead cooled Accelerator Driven System (XT-ADS). As XT-ADS should be used as a technological test bench of the main components of an industrial scale transmutation facility, a conceptual design of the industrial scale ADS (EFIT) is developed in parallel to address as much as possible the XT-ADS design. The preliminary design of EFIT has started with a set of basic options derived from a revision of the previous design of an ADS demo (PDS-XADS) taking into account the economic requirements needed for an industrial transmutator: the use of melt pure lead as a coolant, the elimination of intermediate loops, the installation of heat exchangers and mechanical pumps inside the primary vessel and the adoption of an uranium free fuel. For the time being a preliminary design of EFIT implementing these project options has been set up, in parallel the fall on of these choices in the reactor T/H and safety is being evaluating by means of the RELAP5 code. The RELAP T/H model of EFIT here adopted represents the first step for the development of a numerical model for the dynamic simulation of the sub-critical reactor (T/H e neutronic coupled for safety analyses). In the meantime that a neutronic design is still in progress, the RELAP stand-alone analyses have been addressed to verify the capability of the T/H design to face up high temperature and power density and to pass from MOX fuel to U-free fuel both in operational and accidental conditions. In particular unprotected scenarios have been considered to have a first evaluation of the intrinsic safety behavior of the plant
