Some European companies (ENEA - Italy, SIVECO Group - France, ANSALDO - Italy, IIS sa - Greece, ATC - Italy) developed, in an international project partially financed by the European Commission in the frame of the BRITE-EURAM Programme (DG XII - Science, Research and Development), an innovative software tool denominated IRCM (Innovative Reliability Centered Maintenance) for the improvement of the maintenance planning of industrial systems on the basis of reliability criteria. The method is based on a realistic evaluation (starting from previously collected historical data) of the total failure rate of the components constituting the considered equipment, on the analysis of its time trend to select the only components on which maintenance must be applied and to preliminarily define it and on the improvement of the maintenance strategies so preliminarily defined on the basis of availability and costs criteria. Besides a short description of the main features of the developed software, the present paper contains a summary of the main results obtained by its application on a truck system used for the waste transport and disposal. Such application was performed together some others in the project to test the developed method and to demonstrate its utility and applicability in the improvement of the maintenance planning of industrial systems on the basis of reliability criteria.
