Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has been applied to an Italian case study of integrated waste management (IWM) by the aid of a software tool named WISARDTM. The purpose of the study is to compare the environmental profiles of an IWM actual scenario (1997) and of a future scenario (2003), as described by the new local waste management plan (WMP). The shift from a massive use of landfill to an increased recycle and incineration rates of municipal solid waste (MSW) leads to a significant improvement of almost all considered impact categories. This study confirms that the adoption and implementation of the new WMP makes for a noticeable amelioration of the global environmental profile of the IWM system of the investigated area.

Abstract
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has been applied to an Italian case study of integrated waste management (IWM) by the aid of a software tool named WISARDTM. The purpose of the study is to compare the environmental profiles of an IWM actual scenario (1997) and of a future scenario (2003), as described by the new local waste management plan (WMP). The shift from a massive use of landfill to an increased recycle and incineration rates of municipal solid waste (MSW) leads to a significant improvement of almost all considered impact categories. This study confirms that the adoption and implementation of the new WMP makes for a noticeable amelioration of the global environmental profile of the IWM system of the investigated area.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
