In order to evaluate the reliability, stability and robustness of the V1.1 version of ASTEC code, a comparison with MELCOR code, referring to the H2 sequence in a French PWR 900 MWe, has been performed by ENEA FIS/NUC in the ambit of the RAB (Reactor Application and Benchmarking) work package of SARNET-ASTEC. This is the first time that a French REP900 is modelled using MELCOR. In this report only the first part of the whole planned work is reported. The remaining work, consisting of additional and more detailed code-to-code comparisons, will be performed after the release of new code versions, both for ASTEC (by July 2005) and MELCOR (by September/October 2005).
