The sub-critical system is a LBE (Lead-Bismuth-Eutectic) cooled core (80MWth) coupled with a LBE windowless target. Here the residual nuclei formed in the LBE primary system are analyzed together with their corresponding activity, taking into account nuclear interactions caused by neutrons coming from both the fission processes and the spallation processes. After 20 years of full power irradiation the total activity of the primary loop (1936tons of LBE) is about 8E17Bq with more than 90% due to the formation of 210Bi and 210Po (about 2kg after 3 years). The calculations are performed by means of the computer codes MCNPX and SPFISPACT.

Abstract

This document was prepared in the framework of PDS-XADS Preliminary Design Studies of an eXperimental Accelerator Driven System), as contribution to DeliverabIe 58 (Work Package 4.1).
