The aim of this work is to implement a remotely controlled portable system with low-cost solid-state gas sensors for real-time measurements of air pollution in cities. This smart device is made with a core sensor-array integrating both commercial gas sensors and functional carbon nanostructures gas sensors. Air pollutants (CO, NOx and other volatile compounds) have been addressed for early warning detection. Calibration of the portable sensor-system has been realized in real urban scenario and referenced by conventional chemical analyzers of the air-quality stations and a Mobile Analytical Laboratory. This portable sensor-system is able to monitor some air-pollutants (i.e., CO and NOx) in the range of the ppm and ppb level, respectively, of environmental interest for air quality control, as regulated by EU Directive 2008/50/EC.
